Controlling your garage
gate from your phone.

Opening the gate from your phone looks like a simple feature, but it touches three things at once: the gate motor, the home network, and the safety of whoever is standing beneath it. Ignore any one of them and it turns from convenience into a hazard.

A module is added — it doesn't replace the motor

In most cases you don't need to change the gate motor. A small control module is added, wired to the two operating terminals on the motor board, so it mimics a press of the remote.

The condition is that the board supports an external input — and most common motors do. Checking before you buy saves you from a module that won't work.

Knowing the gate's state, not just opening it

A module that only opens leaves you in doubt: did the gate actually close or not?

Add a state sensor (magnetic or tilt sensor) that tells the app: open or closed. Without it, you'll open the gate remotely to check — and end up opening one that was already closed.

Safety is not optional

The gate is now operated without you seeing it. So you must confirm the safety sensors (Photocell) are working — the ones that stop the movement when there is an object underneath.

And if they aren't present, installing them is a condition before enabling remote control, not after. This is not a luxury — gates are heavy and children play near them.

Network and permissions

The module needs stable wireless coverage at the gate — which is usually the farthest point from the router. You may need an external Access Point.

And define who has permission to open: family members permanently, and the driver on a temporary permission that is revoked when their employment ends. Link it to the entrance camera so you can see before you open.

Practical takeaways

  • Check that the motor board supports an external input first
  • Add a state sensor, not just an opening module
  • Confirm the safety sensors work before enabling control
  • Provide stable wireless coverage at the gate
  • Link it to the entrance camera and set the permissions
