Fiber or copper: choose the link around the site, not habit

Copper is excellent inside its designed distance. Fiber becomes the safer backbone when buildings are far apart, electrical environments are noisy, or future capacity matters.

Networks & infrastructure

Distance changes the design

Standard copper Ethernet runs have a practical channel limit around 100 metres. Longer links need an intermediate cabinet or a different medium.

Electrical separation matters

Fiber does not carry electrical current between buildings and is immune to electromagnetic interference, which is valuable around motors, power equipment and separate earth systems.

The endpoints still need planning

Fiber type, strand count, connectors, modules, termination boxes and spare capacity must be documented together.

Project checklist

  • Measure the actual route, not the straight-line distance
  • Keep spare strands for resilience and growth
  • Label and test every strand at handover

Practical takeaways

  • Define the operating requirement before choosing products
  • Document interfaces, failure behaviour and ownership
  • Test the completed system and keep records for support
FAQ

What clients ask us.

Can cameras run over fiber?
Yes. Fiber carries the network backbone; local PoE switches provide power to cameras near each area.
Is outdoor copper acceptable?
Only when distance, surge protection, pathway and grounding are properly designed; fiber is often the safer building-to-building choice.
